Our Mission: To Promote Civic Education and Citizen Action for Peace and Justice Through Art
- We promote civic education and peace education through exhibitions of the Peace Mural by artist Huong;
- We bring the Peace Mural to public venues in cities across the United States and on college campuses;
- We involve citizens in peace advocacy through interactive experiences with the Peace Mural;
- We convene community dialogues and related education events in conjunction with the exhibitions;
- We seek to make manifest the evils of war;
- We reach out to youth in a special way, to develop the next generation of peacemakers;
- We nurture the development of artists who promote civic participation on themes of peace and social justice;
- We collaborate with organizations who share the Foundation’s purposes;
The Peace Mural by HUONG s a 600 foot mural that connects concepts of war, peace, refugees, justice, torture, and displacement through the eyes
of the artist, who in 1975 fled Vietnam with only one shoe and her baby son in arms. A former journalist in Vietnam at the time of the war, Huong
swapped her pen for a brush in an effort to ”paint out” the passions within her. Nearly 10 years in the making, the artist Huong has now given
custody of the Peace Mural to a nonprofit organization (The Peace Mural Foundation), to be used in efforts to promote education and civic action for
peace. The Foundation was formed in the Spring of 2008 and is currently making plans to bring to Mural for extended exhibition in Washington DC,
New York City, and on college campuses and in communities across the United States.
This is a temporary website that shares the story of Huong, her work, some of her recent exhibitions of the Mural, and the impact it has on those who
experience it. A permanent website is in development. Also, you may want to view the PhotoShow of the Peace Mural exhibition that recently took
place at the University of North Florida.
